The Police and Fire Commission appointed the interim chiefs to the permanent roles by a 3-1 vote.
Greenfield's wait for permanent police and fire chiefs is over. The Greenfield Police and Fire Commission appointed Jon Cohn as the city’s Fire Chief and Brad Wentlandt as the city’s Police Chief at a meeting at the Law Enforcement Center on Thursday. “They’ve proven themselves,” commissioner Patsy Cashmore said. “It’s pretty awesome what they’ve done (with the budget) with what little they’ve had to work with and what they’ve had to face with the upcoming budget problems the city is facing. They have to have a sense of permanency to do their job. They’ve done an exemplary job and I think we owe it to them.” The commissioners’ support was unanimous but the terms of the appointments were not. Commissioner Nancy Kostecki voted against the …

Ceremony to salute fire chief draws dozens.
Years ago, after dropping a patient off at the hospital, Russ Spahn got that urge to yodel. Instead of yodeling quietly to himself and his partner as they rode in their ambulance, the young paramedic decided to serenade the neighborhood over the emergency vehicle's loud speaker. "Anyone that was out gardening got a taste of his yodeling," said Assistant Fire Chief Steve Bauer to laughs during a ceremony for Chief Spahn, who retired Wednesday from the Greenfield Fire Department after 39 years of service to the city. "The City of Greenfield Police and Fire Commission would like to offer our sincerest congratulations on your retirement and to acknowledge your fine service to the city," said Fire and Police Commission member Patsy …

The former Greendale chief was named the department's interim chief last month.
It is no secret that retiring Greenfield Fire Department Chief Russ Spahn wants the same man chosen to replace him on an interim basis to do so permanently. Battalion Chief Jon Cohn, who has been with the department since November 2009 after serving as fire chief for nearly three years in Greendale, is as qualified a candidate as there is, according to Spahn. "I told the mayor and the (Police and Fire) commission that he’d be their best choice as interim and full-appointed chief," Spahn said Monday afternoon. "He was the person I needed in here to complete my (department restructuring) process and I was fortunate to get him from Greendale. "He’s very well rounded, went thought the consolidation process in the North Shore and he’d be my …

Jon Cohn will take over for Greenfield Fire Chief Russ Spahn on June 1.
Battalion Chief Jon Cohn of the Greenfield Fire Department is humbled and thankful the Greenfield Police and Fire Commission has tabbed him as Fire Chief Russ Spahn's interim replacement. But Cohn, the former Greendale fire chief, hopes that interim tag is just temporary. "I will definitely pursue the permanent fire chief position," Cohn said. Last week, Spahn told the department he will retire June 1. On Tuesday, the Police and Fire Commission appointed Cohn as the interim chief, effective on Spahn's final day. Cohn said he wants to continue the proud traditions of the department but also "make changes where needed." He said the department improved its delivery of paramedic services to the community in 2010, but that it can can still do …
