Whitnall School Board Could Drop to Five Members

The seven-member School Board is considering a drop to five members as the terms of three members are set to expire in spring 2014.

With three school board members up for re-election next spring, the Whitnall School District has explored the possibility of downsizing from a seven-member board to five.

The terms of board president Bernard Shaw, Nancy Zaborowski and TJ Anderson all expire in April 2014.

“If you’re going to do something, now would be the time to do it,” Superintendent Lowell Holtz said at Monday’s meeting.

There are no state requirements regarding the number of board members in relation to a district’s enrollment. Some districts have as many as nine board members. The much-larger Greenfield School District has a seven-member board while nearby and similarly sized Greendale has five.

Board member Quin Brunette said sticking with seven members is the way to go.

“I have no desire to be a member of a five-member board,” he said. “I don’t know where I’d have the time to do more. There are so many committees; it would be like a part-time job.

“I think we’d be doing our community a disservice by lowering (membership).”

Board member Eileen Valaitis said having seven people adds to the depth of experiences and backgrounds that could come in handy at any time.

The board will vote on how many members it will have at a future meeting.
