27th Street Could Fill Two More Vacancies

A tobacco store and automotive shop could be open on Greenfield's side of the busy thoroughfare by this spring.

On the heels of the announcement that the recently vacated Value City Furniture site next to Target will have a new tenant this summer, the City of Greenfield could have two more 27th Street vacancies filled this spring.

One is in the Emporium Square Shopping Center at the intersection at the intersection of College Avenue, where Smoker’s Xone, a tobacco business, is expected to replace Cigarette Mart, 6229 S. 27th St.

Cigarette Mart closed Dec. 31, 2012.

Faisal Farooui and Tajammul Syed, the potential storeowners, have run a similar business in Oak Creek called Tobacco Xpress since February 2012.

Smoker’s Xone, which already has its storefront sign on the building façade, is located right next to George Webb Restaurant.

A little further north, Hael Atari hopes to turn the vacant American Family Insurance drive-thru claim center at 53555 S. 27th St. into a small automotive repair operation.

Atari’s proposed garage, which would be sandwiched between Crazy Jim’s and Tuckaway Animal Clinic, would be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Atari indicated a memo to the city he expected four to five customers per day.

American Family Insurance opened the drive-thru in 1980 but the building has been vacant for 3-4 years.

Both proposals will come before the city’s Plan Commission on Tuesday, March 12, at its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

Unofficially, there are eight vacancies on the west side of 27th Street, between College Avenue and Howard Avenue, excluding the new businesses mentioned above.

As. A non- smoker going on 6 months now. Why do they keep putting up smoke shops. I my self could see healthy shops going up. I see this as waste of tax payer money

Agree on the smoking part, but are tax payers paying any of it? Maybe stop being angry and open a healthy shop.

angry resident, find a healthy business that wants to go in there and then you can complain. I am a FORMER smoker too, but I can choose NOT to go into a smoke shop. I think it's time to get back to letting ADULTS make their own choices, good or bad, instead of government taking our choices away, even in the form of what business we should frequent. Then make us responsible for the choices we make, and live (or not) with those results. And since when does this city NOT need the tax revenue from a new business!

Sorry I got off on a tangent in my previous post. If people want to ruin their health by smoking, it should be their choice, the rest of us can CHOOSE notto!

Steve, go down to the "village square" burn a blue fist. Or, maybe in front of WAL-MART.

As a producer I have better things to do. Drum circles are the blue fisters circle jerk.
