Church Eying Land on Layton Avenue in Greenfield

The new church would need the land to be rezoned from residential to institutional.

Days before the city's decision to not rezone land near Greenfield Middle School, a move that would have opened the door for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints , the city of Greenfield entertained the idea of allowing a large church to be erected on Layton Avenue.

Greenfield NOW reports that the Greenfield Planning Commission was receptive to a proposal by Pastor Mark Weigt of Ridge Community Church, 2626 S. 162nd Street, New Berlin, to build a 30,000-square-foot church on a 12-acre parcel in the 9500 through 9700 blocks on the north side of Layton Avenue.

The land is currently zoned residential and has seven lots, two of which have homes built on them. The land would need to be rezoned as institutional to pave the way for the church. The planning commission approved requests for a conceptual project review at its meeting Aug. 9 at .

NOW's story said a public hearing on rezoning would likely take place in late October or November.
