Walmart Celebrates Grand Opening in Greenfield

The 150,000-square-foot building opened to a large crowd of customers at 7:30 a.m. Friday morning.

A large crowd filled the front entrance of the new super Walmart in Greenfield in anticipation of the Friday morning.

Store manager Joe Shavlik and Greenfield Mayor Michael Neitzke were among those who addressed the crowd, which included several Walmart employees, including 13 associates who helped open Greenfield's old Walmart 23 years ago.

Those 13 associates also conducted the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Neitzke said the idea of building a new Walmart has been around for 7 or 8 years, and he was happy to see all the hard work pay off Friday.

"Cudahy was saying we don’t want a Walmart. Muskego is saying we don’t want a Walmart. Racine, we don’t want a Walmart," Neitzke said. "And I was say, 'We’ll take a Walmart, we’ll take a Walmart.' … And while they could have gone up the road or down the road or anywhere along the road, they decided to stay here in Greenfield.

"It’s a fantastic store, I’m so happy it’s here."

The opening also featured an opening prayer from The Ridge Community Church pastor Mark Weigt, who's church will fill part of the vacant Walmart building, and the national anthem.
