And the Name of the New Police Dog Is ...

One name was chosen from more than 2,300 suggestions. And no, it wasn't Chuck Norris or HeGotMyWeed.

After sifting through more than 2,300 suggestions that came pouring in through a social media contest, the Greenfield Police Department has chosen a name for its new police canine.

"Karma" beat out finalists Bucky, Hero and Chuck Norris. The name was first mentioned by Marina Schmidt, who received a prize pack from the department.

The contest netted the department more than 300 Facebook “likes” as voters had to “like” the page in order to offer a valid suggestion.

Some of the more creative or unusual suggestions included Dunkin, Donut, PAWS (Police Advisory Warning System), Fluffy and HeGotMyWeed.

In revealing the winning name on Facebook today, the department also announced Karma’s handler will be officer Steve Turnacliff, who has been with the department since 2005. He is a field training officer and member of the department tactical team. Turnacliff lives in Greenfield with his wife and daughter.

Turnacliff and Karma will begin training with each other later this month.

Karma will replace Badger, who retired late last year after nine years with the department.
