New Police Canine's Name to Come From Facebook Contest

The Greenfield Police Department is accepting name nominations for its new canine officer.

 

The Greenfield Police Department is turning to its Facebook fans for help in naming the city’s new police dog.

According to the department’s Facebook page, a new canine handler will be traveling to North Carolina next month to train with the new male dog that will replace recently retired Badger.

The dog’s name will come from Facebook fans’ suggestions. The winner will receive a prize package including a stuffed plush custom police dog, Canine Unit fleece, and a chance to meet the yet-to-be-named dog.

The rules are:

  • You must "Like" the Greenfield Police Department on Facebook.
  • Entries will only be accepted through Facebook as a comment.
  • One entry per person.

Offensive suggestions will be deleted, and the winner will be announced Jan. 7.

Previous dogs, including Badger, were Della, Andor, Reggie, Lazer and Raider. DJ is the department’s current canine officer.

Approximately 90 suggestions have been made in the two hours since the contest was announced. They included Rogers, Ammo, Harley and Justice.

Greenfield Police Sgt. Ray Radakovich suggested Sherlock and Fire Chief Jon Cohn offered Sparky as his choice. A certain community news website editor thought Patch or Cody would work.

The Facebook page does not say when the department will stop accepting nominations.
