Freshmen Cross Country Runners Shine for Hawks

The girls freshmen team turned in the best effort in school history at the Arrowhead Invite on Sept. 13.

The Greenfield cross country team ran in two meets last week, including a freshmen invite at Arrowhead on Sept. 13, where the Hustlin’ Hawks girls team finished second to the host school.

Tia Ruland paced the girls in 16 minutes, 47 seconds, followed by Megan Theune’s 16:50, Janie Friedbacker’s 17:58, Kelsey Franckowiak’s 18:13 and Holly Brown’s 22:00.

“This is the best time or finish from a girls freshman team in school history,” coach Ernie Rosenthal said.

The boys were seventh with Dylan Kumbera leading the way.

The next day, the remaining members of the team ran in the Franklin Invite, where the Greenfield boys, led by Casey Sabinash, Tom Friedbacker and Andy Sabinash, ran fifth.

The girls ran an incomplete team because of an in-race injury, but freshman Keely Hanley ran eight in her first-ever competitive 5K race.
