Greenfield Softball Team Advances to Sectional With Late Run

The Hustlin' Hawks will face Muskego in a sectional semifinal Tuesday.

Just nine days after losing to the South Milwaukee Rockets by a score of 3-2, the Greenfield Hustlin' Hawks softball team flipped the script Thursday.

Greenfield scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to snap a 2-2 tie and pull out a 3-2 win in a regional final over the Rockets at Konkel Park.

Greenfield's Alex Sokol singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With an open base, South Milwaukee intentionally walked Andrea Solberg, brining up freshman Lexus Kirkpatrick, who singled sharply to right field to score Sokol with the winning run.

Greenfield's Randi Fenning  had an RBI double and Amber Polachek had RBI single in a two-run fourth inning. SM tied the score with a two-out, two run single in the top of the sixth.

"A very intense, hard-fought game," Greenfield coach Jack Miller said. "Both teams played extremely well in the field. Both teams had great-pitched games. This was an outcome where a team didn’t lose it, which often happens, but a team won it, meaning errors had no effect on the outcome. Both teams earned their runs."

Greenfield's Lexus Kirkpatrick allowed two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and drove in a run for the Hawks, who improved to 19-6 and snapped a three-game losing streak to the Rockets.

Third-seeded Greenfield will play at second-seeded Muskego (18-8) in a sectional semifinal Tuesday, time to be determined. The Hawks lost to the Warriors, 9-0, in a nonconference game in late May.
