Hawks' Quest for Fifth Straight Conference Title Begins This Week

It may not feel like spring just yet, but the spring high school sports season is ramping up this week with multiple teams slated to begin competition, weather permitting.

Among them is the Greenfield softball team, which opens the season with a Woodland Conference showdown with Greendale at Konkel Park at 4:15 p.m. Thursday.

The Hawks went 20-6 a year ago and won their fourth straight conference title but missed out on a fourth trip to the WIAA state tournament when they lost to South Milwaukee in a sectional semifinal.

Greenfield lost just two seniors off that team, the pitcher-catcher battery of Shannon Butts and Jessica Manzuk. Butts was a former conference player of the year.

Here is a summary of other teams in action this week.

• The Greenfield girls soccer team is slated to visit Muskego at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and host Madison La Follette at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
• The Greenfield girls and boys track teams will participate in a rare dual meet with West Allis Hale at West Allis Central at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, and then compete at Carthage College in the multi-team Racine Case Invite at 4 p.m. Friday. 
• The Whitnall soccer team is slated to visit Oak Creek at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday before hosting two home games: Waterford at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and West Allis Central at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
• The Falcons softball team opens the league season in Pewaukee at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday and then takes on perennial league power New Berlin Eisenhower at home at 4:15 p.m. Friday.
• The Whitnall boys track team will compete in the multi-team Kenosha Bradford Invitational at Carthage College at 10 a.m. Saturday.
