Whitnall's Zurowski, Co-Op Gymnastics Team Looking to Repeat

The Whitnall junior will lead a contingent of gymnasts to the state meet in Wisconsin Rapids this weekend.

The local gymnastics co-op, which includes athletes from , Franklin, Muskego and Oak Creek, will be looking to make a little history this weekend at the WIAA Division 1 State Meet.

And Whitnall's Lauren Zurowski figures to play a big role.

The co-op, which , qualified for the state meet for the fifth straight season by finishing second at the Burlington Sectional to its host Feb. 25. The co-op is now trying to become the ninth D1 program to defend its state title.

Zurowski, a junior, is trying to become the first D1 vaulter to since Racine's Rachel Sommer in 2003 and 2004. Zurowski .

Zurowski qualified for state in the all-around competition with her effort at Burlington. She will be joined by several teammates in the individual portion of the meet: junior Rachel Tillman in the vault and on floor; Muskego junior Sammie Olson on bars and beam; Muskego senior Courtney L'Huillier on the beam and Franklin junior Melanie Pearson on the floor.

The individual meet begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Wisconsin Rapids High School Fieldhouse, and the team meet is at 11 a.m. Saturday. For information on all teams, check out the WIAA's tournament preview.
