Whitnall Softball Team Kicks Off Busy Week with Win

The Falcons improved to 3-3 overall with a convincing victory over Pewaukee on Monday.

Think you're busy this spring?

Try spending a week in Whitnall softball coach Tom Hickman's shoes, or any of his players for that matter. Specifically, this week.

Thanks to a seemingly continuous rainfall that lasted most of April, the Falcons kicked off a nine-game week Monday with a 16-2 win over Pewaukee to improve to 3-3 overall, 2-2 in the Woodland Conference.

Pitcher Carly Wagner allowed just three hits in the complete-game victory and got plenty of offensive support from Alex Cimler (three hits, three RBI), Liz Thon (three hits, three runs), Lizzy Menden (two triples) and Katie Rosenwald (two doubles, two RBI).

Barring any inclement weather, the game was the first of many this week for the Falcons, who have daily contests through Friday, including a doubleheader against St. Francis on Thursday, before playing three nonconference games in the Poynette Jamboree on Saturday.

The win came at a good time for the Falcons, who squeezed in a handful of games last week but lost the final two to league foes: an 8-3 loss at South Milwaukee on Thursday and a 9-5 defeat at New Berlin Eisenhower on Friday.

Whitnall took a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth before Eisenhower came back with a five-run fourth highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Katie Lang and Samantha Lewiston.

Whitnall had a scoring chance in the sixth but the Lions recorded consecutive outs at home plate the squelch the threat.

"We didn't execute on the bases properly on those two plays at the plate," Hickman said. "It's still early in the season and hopefully as we move forward we will learn from those mistakes."
